Orleans Town Clerk Robert F. Henderson has announced that the town has received official notification that Saving Historic Orange County’s (SHOC) nomination of the Orleans Historic District has been accepted by the Dept. of Interior's National Park Service placing the Orleans Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

“We are obviously very pleased by this announcement and excited about the possibilities that exist to better help preserve some of our town’s rich and interesting history,” said Henderson who also served as the project manager. The nearly year-long project was a joint collaboration between the town and SHOC. “This is such a nice honor for our little town and hopefully will create some interest and awareness in local preservation efforts he added.

The town’s newly created historic district is roughly bounded by Wilson, Franklin, Harrison & 4 th Sts., and includes some 200 properties.

Plans are in the works to hold a brief dedication ceremony in the new few weeks with a more formal celebration planned during the Dogwood Festival next spring. Other considerations include the development of new historic walking tour brochure, signage for some of the historic buildings and homes & newly designed banners for the downtown portion of the district.

Nixle is a new community information service provider built exclusively to provide secure and reliable communications. Its authenticated service connects municipal agencies and community organizations to residents in real time, delivering information to geographically targeted consumers over their cell phones (via text messages), through e-mails and through Web access. Nixle is offered at no cost to all governments, their agencies and organizations, nongovernmental organizations and consumers.

Orleans Police will be able to use Nixle to deliver police and community related information of all types, such as street closings, weather conditions, community event information, and cancellations to name just a few.

For now, Orleans residents will be able to receive police-related information and municipal government information via Nixle. Channels providing other kinds of information are expected to be introduced in the future.

Craig Mitnick, the founder and CEO of Nixle, said Nixle differs from current services such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, which provide unauthenticated platforms for connections. Nixle solves that problem by providing a single standardized service for consumers to receive immediate and credible neighborhood-level public safety and community information.

“Nixle is a first-of-its-kind tool for communities that need to provide critical information to their residents,” said Craig Mitnick, founder and CEO. “When it comes to public safety information, you have to trust the source. Residents of Orleans can rest easy that the local messages they receive are authentic.”

Town Stepping Up Efforts On Unkempt Properties In Town

Orleans Town officials continue to receive numerous complaints about local property owners who have not cut their grass and weeds, as well as complaints on several unkempt areas around town this summer.

Residents are reminded once again that lawns and lots in town must be kept mowed, and trash items and other debris picked up. Residents are urged to refrain from blowing grass clippings into the streets and roadways, as this practice prohibited by ordinance, clogs the storm drains and contributes to the town’s overall flooding problems during periods of heavy rainfall.

Several residents have sent notices and those not complying will be turned over to the town attorney. If property owners do not clean up their properties, town employees can do the work and owners be direct billed for it.

The town contracts services of Ron Taylor to spray for mosquitoes and is asking residents to continue to assist in those efforts for general health & safety by keeping all yards and lots mowed off, any brush type items removed, and any type of standing water removed. Old tires should be discarded and rain gutters & down spouts should be checked & cleaned regularly to allow water to flow freely.
